Study English with Series and Movies

3 easy tips for you to start doing it today

#1 Use No Subtitles or Subtitles in English!

Try to watch movies and series in the original audio language. Subtitles are allowed if you go for the English ones instead of reading translations.
It’ll be useful for you to get in contact with the native speakers’ voices and accents. And even if you don’t understand everything the characters say, you can focus on their pronunciation. If you want to be fluent you should also pay attention to the intonation and tone because they are so important as the meaning of the words in a conversation.

#2 Watch Your Favorites!

Start re-watching the movies and series that you already know. Choosing your favorites to study English will help you to provide meaning.
Once you already know the story and the characters in own language, it’ll be just a matter of adapting to the other language.
Also, it’ll be easier for you to focus on the English because it’ll catch your brains attention as the only “new” thing.

#3 Improve Your Vocabulary!

Take notes about the words, expressions and idioms you don’t know while watching to search later.
You can also stablish a goal number of new words (e.g. 10) to learn every time you watch an episode or a film.
Listening the soundtracks and trying to sing along it’s another good way to improve your vocabulary and remember the best moments of the story.

Friends - Present Continuous to talk about future

When you listen to “Present continuous” you think about an action that it’s happening at the moment, right? Because it’s present continuous, right? So we can use it just to talk about the present, right??? WRONG!!! Pay attention to the following scene from the sitcom Friends: Right at the beginning, at 0:11, Joey says: “ My character is coming out of his coma! ” But he means that this fact is going to happen in the next chapters of the soap opera “Days of our lives”, not at that exactly minute. Do you think this is weird? I KNOW!! (*read it with Monica’s voice, please). However, Present Continuous can refer to the future, to express prearranged plans and events and to show that we have already decided something. At 0:17 and 0:29 of the video, Joey says, respectively: “ I’m getting a new brain .” “ Her brain is being transplanted into my body.” Again, he uses the verbal tense to express a fact that it’s going to happen in the future.
